GET TO KNOW DAVE SHEAR OF USELESS DESIRES

San Francisco, CA – December 28, 2008

What is your performance name?
Useless Desires

How would you describe what you do?
As the bands songwriter, I consciously make an effort to write a variety of different songs based on my many influences. From exercising my Road Rage demons to yearning a Soul Mate, my goal is to write lyrics and music that conveys emotion.

How long have you been doing this and when did you get started?
The entire band has a long history of playing music. In my early teens, I wrote poetry. As I honed my skills on guitar, I began writing songs in my early twenties. I always loved music as a child and the way it affects my moods.

Who made the most impact on you and why?
From a lyrical standpoint, I would say my parents and more specifically how I was raised. While I don’t write many songs about events of my upbringing, I do write from a genuine place inside me. My parents always taught honesty and always left an open door for self expression. From a musical standpoint, I would say The Beatles, Nirvana and Radiohead.

Give us a recap of the year 2008. What have you done to add to your success?
Well, let’s start with lots of time in the studio both recording and mixing. As a band, we continued to play live shows in San Francisco, which helped build anticipation for this album. We are excited for this debut album release and to continue to grow our fan base.

If you could have done something different last year, what would that have been?
As a band, we are very proud of this album. If there was one thing to change, it would have been the number of hours spent in the studio in 2007 and 2008. My pockets are empty. For our next album, I expect that the band will have a stronger sense of everyone’s musical parts in advance of the recording. If they don’t have a sense, I’ll need to crack some skulls. We really need to have our parts nailed and this will save time and money.

Other than a stack of money, what are the resources that you need to help you?
It really comes down to exposure. As an unsigned band, we need to continue to play live shows, but really establish media relationships that can help provide exposure. From video and radio to potential licensing efforts, we need to make our music visible to the masses.

What do you think you are going to need to learn about the business to help you be successful?
First and foremost, the business side of music takes persistence and discipline. Fortunately, our bass player, Curt Yagi has experience in this area in working with his own band. At the same time, none of us want to expend time and energy running in circles with little progress. We need to meet the right contacts and learn from other bands that have been successful with their business approaches. Finally, we need to take some chances and calculated risks.

Are you working on anything new?
The band has been playing 5-6 new songs that will definitely show up on a follow-up album. I have continued to write new songs and expect that we will soon have 10 new songs to play live. For this debut album, we plan to shoot a few videos that may help draw attention to our music. We are cooking up a video for the song Road Rage.

Where can people learn more about you? What’s your website?
Everything you need to know is at www.uselessdesires.com or www.myspace.com/uselessdesiresband. We can be reached via email at info@uselessdesires.com and would love to hear from our fans.

What words of wisdom do you have for others who are just getting started?
For any bands playing original music, be sure to write lyrics and play music that comes from the soul. It’s easy to see through bands that try to write songs that are cookie cutter and fit some mainstream sound.

Is there anything else you would like to share?
Go to our website to hear the songs. The album won’t disappoint. For anyone in the bay area, get out to a live show. Again, we won’t disappoint.
